 Course Description  

Designed to assist UBC members' response in a medical emergency. It is conducted through the Evergreen Safety Council and uses curriculum from the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) - an objectives-driven, skill-based training program. The student is required to meet the knowledge and skill objectives listed in this program to receive an initial certification card - valid 2 years.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the priority of personal safety when responding to an emergency situation, and demonstrate the correct method for removal of contaminated gloves.
2. Identify how to activate emergency medical services, and describe & perform the steps of a primary assessment for an unresponsive person.
3. Explain how to protect the airway of an unresponsive, breathing victim and describe the steps of a primary assessment for a responsive victim.
4. Describe and/or demonstrate how to recognize and provide first aid treatment for the following:
   • a. Severe bleeding; b. Shock; c. A head, neck, or back injury; d. A swollen, painful, deformed limb;
   • e. A burn; f. A person with an altered mental status; g. A stroke; h. Asthma, breathing difficulty or shortness of breath;
   • I. A severe allergic reaction; j. A pain, severe pressure, or discomfort in the chest; k. Poisoning; l. Heat and cold-related emergences.
5. Correctly demonstrate how to perform external chest compressions and rescue breaths using a CPR mask or shield.
6. Describe the steps for safely attaching and correctly operating an automated external defibrillator (AED).
7. Describe how to recognize and provide first aid treatment for choking.

Course Contents
