 Course Description  

Rebuilding & machining operations of gasoline and diesel cylinder heads. Learn and practice a variety of procedures including tear-down and diagnosis, machining of parts, assembly and testing. Emphasizes understanding the internal combustion engine and attention to detail in measuring, machining, assembly and safe practices. Designed for industry professionals and non-degree seeking students.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Correctly identify cylinder head components and describe their purpose and function. Perform cylinder head disassembly, inspecting components for wear and damage.
2. Use precision measuring tools to correctly identify part wear and calculate clearances.
3. Understand machining procedures related to cylinder head reconditioning.
4. Perform proper set-up and machining of a cylinder head assembly including valve guide service, valve seat service, pressure testing, resurfacing, and a variety of other general machining procedures.
5. Understand and perform proper cylinder head assembly procedures.
6. Understand performance modifications related to cylinder heads, including proper part selection for specific applications.
7. Demonstrate safe practices while using a variety of engine and general machining equipment.

Course Contents

1. Disassemble, clean and evaluate cylinder heads and cylinder head components.
2. Use precision measuring tools to correctly identify part wear and calculate clearances.

4. Replace valve seats and guides demonstrating proper machine set-up and machining procedures.
5. Pressure test cylinder head demonstrating proper machine set-up.
6. Resurface cylinder head demonstrating proper machine set-up and machining procedures.
7. Assemble cylinder head demonstrating proper assembly procedures.
