 Course Description  

Training for the EMT-Basic level per National Standards Curriculum, Washington State Department of Health regulation, and Skagit County EMS protocol. Learn to recognize, assess, and treat medical and trauma-related emergencies at the basic life support level. Master field skills for placement in responding EMS companies. Preparation for National Registry EMT certification testing and includes the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician certification practical examination for EMT-Basic.

Prerequisite: In accordance with Washington State Law, must be at least 17 years of age at course start.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Be familiar with emergency medical care, the emergency medical service system, roles & responsibilities to the EMT-Basics, quality improvement and medical direction.
2. Know basic anatomy & physiology to the EMT-Basic level. Work as a team member.
3. Assess effectively a patient�s vital signs and develop a medical history on each patient using appropriate methods and provide continuing patient assessment.
4. Safely lift, move and restrain patients without endangerment of self, patient or others, using proper body mechanics and techniques.
5. Learn the EMT-Basic pharmacokinetics and proper dosage, assistance with, and administration routes.
6. Perform appropriate treatment for respiratory distress and emergencies. Perform appropriate treatment for cardiovascular emergencies.
7. Recognize the signs and symptoms of an allergic or diabetic reaction and be able to properly assist and treat.
8. Understand the concept of bleeding, shock, hypo-perfusion, the types and causes, and effectively treat.
9. Perform proper musculoskeletal care, immobilization and other trauma related injury care.
10. Understand the differences in treating infants and children, common medical and trauma related emergency and proper treatments.
11. Knowledge of emergency medical service operations, rescue techniques, triage, and other operational issues as they related to the EMT-Basic.
12. Communicate and understand how to relate to a diverse and multicultural population in an emergency situation.
13. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Students will efficiently utilize tactical resources and effective methods of deployment in responding to a variety of emergency incidents.�
