 Course Description  

A course for English Language Acquisition students with an emphasis on developing speaking fluency, listening, and pronunciation. This prepares students for College and Career Bridge classes. Speak for understanding and clarity through peer interviews, group discussions, and presentations. Demonstrate ability to comprehend, pronounce, and define academically appropriate vocabulary. Participate actively in class and group discussions. Demonstrate academic listening comprehension by identifying main ideas and answering questions about text.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: Receive a "P" grade in ELA 013 (or placement into ELA 014, ESOL 041/042/043, ELA 015, ESOL 051/052/053, ELA 018, ELA 095, CCB 095, CCB 096, or CCB 097)

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Actively engage in speaking and listening activities.
  2. Take notes on discussion, lecture, or video/audio that includes main idea and correlating questions.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate listening behaviors by not interrupting others, limiting cell phone use, making eye contact with speaker, and using gestures such as nodding to indicate attention.
  4. Demonstrate academic listening skills by asking clarification questions of speaker using appropriate tone.
  5. Build on the ideas of others by referencing what was said previously while clearly expressing own point of view even if different than previous speaker.
