 Course Description  

Explore and apply the concepts, principles, problems, and practices of operations management in different sizes and types of healthcare organizations. Topics include operations strategy, process design, capacity planning, facilities location and design, forecasting, scheduling, quality assurance, continual improvement and operational effectiveness, environmentally sustainable practices, and inventory management.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify established and emerging elements of Operations Management (OM) in healthcare, including technology, by researching their application in OM and non-OM healthcare situations.
  2. Examine the relationships between management, OM, and other management functions within a healthcare organization by analyzing the enterprise impact of decisions.
  3. Examine how the Operations Management function can influence operational actions to address community/societal challenges such as water pollution, disease management and disposal of hazardous material by critiquing relevant applications in the healthcare field.
  4. Determine ways to counteract the impact of bias on operational effectiveness in a healthcare setting by applying tools such as root cause analysis.
