ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will take an intensive course for English language learners with an emphasis on communication skills.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: CASAS and CaMLA testing, B- (80%) or higher in ELA 065, or permission of ELA and EAP department chairs

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Speak for understanding and clarity through partner interviews, group discussions, and presentations.
  2. Demonstrate ability to comprehend, pronounce, and define level-appropriate academic vocabulary, focusing on consonant clusters and specific intonation patterns.
  3. Participate actively in class and group discussions by listening, taking notes, and speaking.
  4. Present new vocabulary, ideas, and topics using research from level-appropriate sources.
  5. Use select media such as Microsoft PowerPoint and/or videos to give presentations on assigned topics.
  6. Take notes that correctly utilize key words, abbreviations, and symbols.
  7. Demonstrate academic listening comprehension by identifying main ideas and answering questions about lectures.
  8. Effectively ask content questions about presentations, lectures, and class discussions.
  9. Engage in experiential learning projects such as participating in on-campus activities, volunteering in the community, and the Conversation Partner Program.
