 Course Description  

Advanced application of the principles of diagnostic and procedural coding and auditing practice using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes in coding exercises and abstracted medical records in various healthcare settings.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisites: AHE 221 and AHE 222 with a grade of C or higher. Concurrent enrollment in AHE 240 required.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Follow current established guidelines in outpatient diagnostic code assignment.
  2. Apply outpatient procedure and diagnosis codes using patient charts.
  3. Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in patient record.
  4. Using audit forms, review assigned CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes on patient records and resolving any discrepancies.
  5. Provide rationale for any coding changes based on supporting documentation.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in coding in hospital outpatient and clinic services, physician practice encounters, home health services, and long-term care.
  7. Critique a variety of coding systems, including CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10, as well as DRG.
