Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform basic operations and rounding with whole numbers, decimals, and/or fractions.
  2. Draw, construct, identify, describe, and measure geometrical figures using their unique properties.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of congruence and similarity by calculating ratios and proportions.
  4. Determine the objective and appropriate tools when solving real-life and mathematical geometry problems.
  5. Demonstrate mathematical literacy by using geometry and algebra vocabulary, notation, and precision.

Course Contents

  1. Basic Arithmetic Skills Adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Order of operations Rounding and estimation Measuring lines and angles Draw and construct geometrical figures
  2. Basic Algebra Solve linear equations Solve ratios and proportions
  3. Geometry Identify/describe lines, angles, and geometrical figures (i.e. rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid, parallelogram, circle, rectangular solid, cube, cylinder, and sphere.) Describe the relationship between different geometric shapes Use basic perimeter, area, surface area, and volume formulas Understand congruence and similarity (i.e. lines, angles, 2D figures) Use mathematical constant \pi in applications involving circular figures
  4. Mathematical literacy Vocabulary for algebra and geometry Mathematical notation Critically read, understand, and analyze story problems
  5. Technology skills Use calculators like the Ti-30xs to perform basic math operations
