 Course Description  

Develops the carpenters� ability to select and use proper means and methods for identifying the sources of, and preventing exposure to, asbestos and lead. Fundamentals of respiratory protection, protective clothing and equipment, hygiene facilities and practices, and medical surveillance models will be covered. Three major conceptual schemes comprise the focus of this course: asbestos and lead hazard variables, mitigating risk of exposure, and corrective action for confirmed exposure.

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the effects of chronic overexposure to asbestos and lead.
  2. Explain health protection goals of standard 29 CFR 1910.1025, appendices A&B.
  3. Discuss the type of project or nature of operations that could result in exposure to asbestos.
  4. Describe the concept of �Medical Surveillance� and under what environmental conditions at the jobsite it must be made available to you.
  5. Demonstrate techniques of using respiratory protection per standard 29 CFR 1910.134.
  6. Correctly select materials, from a given sampling, known to contain asbestos and lead.
  7. Use air sampling data, or the results of air sampling test, to determine if an air monitoring must be initiated, and, if initiated, when it can be discontinued and for how long.
