 Course Description  

Explores cultural differences in communication styles and thought through the study of American ethnic, gender, and other groups, and the practice of effective intercultural communication strategies in various leadership roles and communication contexts.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: ENGL 099 with a "C" or higher (or placement into ENGL& 101).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the influence of culture on communication by
   • Recognizing gender and ethnic based differences in communication
   • Describing communication competence in terms of multicultural communication situations
   • Identifying cultural patterns, orientations, or other differences that may impact individual communication styles
2. Develop critical thinking skills to apply in multicultural communication context, specifically
   • Developing connections between communication and other academic areeas and/or personal contexts
   • Adapting and applying appropriate communication strategies in dealing with diverse individuals, groups, and/or cultures
   • Applying a communication framework or perspective to individual and/or group projects
3. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and basic skills in multicultural communication, including
   • Identifying and explaining the model, components, conditions, and common terminology of communication and culture
   • Researching and preparing class presentations according to recognized standards
   • Identifying his/her own communication behaviors, including those associated with identity, language, and nonverbal communication, and describing/demonstrating appropriate techniques to improve multicultural communication
   • Building confidence in communicating verbally and nonverbally, one-on-one, in small groups, and before the class
   • Applying textbook and supplemental reading assignments and library and/or technological research to individual, dyadic, or group projects
