Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Perform basic operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, with rational numbers.
  2. Determine place values to round and/or approximate numerical quantities.
  3. Calculate geometric properties such as area, perimeter, and volume.
  4. Draw basic geometric shapes and figures using appropriate tools.
  5. Demonstrate emerging understanding of integers by identifying negative, neutral, and positive numbers.
  6. Demonstrate mathematical literacy by using mathematically appropriate vocabulary, notation, and significant digits
  7. Solve real-life and theoretical applications by identifying the objective and relevant mathematical tools.
  8. Use scientific calculators to solve real-life and theoretical problems.
  9. Locate and use mathematical learning resources.
  10. Solve geometric problems using ratios and proportions.

Course Contents

  1. Basic Arithmetic Skills, including
    • Adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
    • Order of operations
    • Rounding and estimation
    • Measuring lines and angles
    • Draw and construct lines, angles, and/or geometrical figures using appropriate tools, such as a straight edge, a protractor, and/or a compass
    • Solve ratios and proportions
  2. Topics in geometry, including
    • Identify/describe lines, angles, and geometrical figures (i.e. rectangle, square, triangle, trapezoid, parallelogram, circle, rectangular solid, cube, cylinder, and sphere)
    • Calculate perimeter, area, surface area, and volume
    • Identify the difference between congruence and similarity (i.e. lines, angles, 2D figures)
    • Use mathematical constant \pi in applications involving circular figures
  3. Mathematical literacy
    • Mathematical vocabulary
    • Mathematical notation
    • Critically read, understand, and analyze real-life and theoretical problems
  4. Technology skills, including using calculators
    • Use basic scientific calculators like the Ti-30xs to perform basic math operations
    • Using free e-learning tools available through a learning management system, such as Canvas, and a mathematics assessment management system, such as WAMAP
