 Course Description  

Develop the ability to select and use proper means and methods of installing metal flashing, trim, and wall coping. Topics include the benefits and applications of flashing and coping, material handling and placement strategies, plan reading, and OSHA safety models. Focuses on three major conceptual schemes: Substrate preparation and layout, installation methods and sequencing, and precision cutting and bending techniques. Emphasis will be on installing the most common building envelope systems.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamentals of metal flashing, trim, and coping installations.
  2. Identify connection details and corresponding connection hardware shown on detail drawings for flashing, trims, and parapet coping components and related fasteners.
  3. List the steps of installation in correct sequence, including methods for addressing issues with substrates that do not comply with tolerances specified by project documents.
  4. Install termination flashings, coping, counter, scupper, downspout, base, sill, inside and outside corners, using cutting, bending, and shaping techniques.
  5. Select tools to cut, bend, and shape back dams, end dams, and similar work scope tasks.
  6. Locate installation details in the project documents and sequence cuts and bends for each part used on the mockup project.
  7. Install flashings, trims, and copings as indicated on the mockup project documents.
