 Course Description  

Covers components of Scaffolding working drawings, techniques for interpreting project documents, and principles of sketching and drafting to accurately estimate the material and labor hours required to stage, erect, and dismantle various scaffold projects commonly used in petroleum refineries and on construction jobsites. OSHA Fall Protection for Construction, including Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS), horizontal lifelines, and system component inspection will be covered. Includes training in basic First Aid, CPR, and AED skills. Assessment of student abilities from prior experience include written tests, individual interviews, and a variety of hands-on projects in the shop. Completion of this course and progression in the program is based on active participation and mastery of classroom activities, written exams, and shop projects (lab).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of working drawings in context of scaffold erection.
  2. Demonstrate techniques for interpreting contract documents to plan scaffolding installations on projects in petroleum refineries and general building construction per plans and specifications in accordance with authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  3. Explain the process used to estimate labor and materials needed to stage, erect, and dismantle a scaffold.
  4. Successfully complete the American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) CPR, AED and First Aid for the Community and the Workplace certification.
  5. Demonstrate use of a PFAS including inspecting and installing anchor points and connecting hardware.
  6. Explain the purpose of a Controlled Decking Zone and an example of its use in refinery settings.
