 Course Description  

Techniques and ecological context for restoration and its application in the conservation of biodiversity. Covers state and federal laws pertaining to ecological field work and potential funding sources. Evaluation of social and economic impact of restoration to diverse groups of people. Includes methods in biological engineering.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Perform ecological restoration of terrestrial and aquatic systems using bioengineering as well as simple engineering solutions, and to evaluate the long-term success of these restoration efforts.
2. Work with the appropriate local, state and federal agencies involved in ecological restoration and work within the guidelines of SEPA.
3. Describe the connection between ecological restoration and conservation biology.
4. Develop a comprehensive restoration proposal.
5. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Outline an ecological sampling design.
6. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Construct a realistic ecological restoration project; correct spatial and temporal scales; costs, ecological elements and processes restored.

7. Obstructions/fishways/fish passage.

10. Biodiversity, socio-economics, and restoration.
11. Research technical journals.
12. Group presentations.
    • Presentation regarding the ecological restoration project must include considerations to different socioeconomic constraints from project neighbors.
