 Course Description  

Alcoholism and other disorders as a family disease; effects of role disturbance, boundary violations, and communication disruptions on children, spouse, and family systems; therapeutic interventions for families. Development of a multicultural perspective in working with families and within communities. Required course for students seeking the Substance Use Disorder Counseling track (including fast track students).

  1. Identify the variety of roles that family members may adopt in order to accommodate the presence of a family member with an active addiction.
  2. Identify the unwritten rules that families often live by to accommodate the presence of a family member with an active addiction.
  3. Articulate cultural factors which influence a family�s relational dynamics.
  4. List a minimum of ten important reasons for offering family counseling within a substance use treatment program.
  5. Compare and contrast family counseling and family therapy based on the Substance Use Disorder Professional (SUDPT) Scope of Practice. (RCW 18.205.20)
