 Course Description  

An introductory studio course that focuses on fundamental painting techniques, composition, and preparation. Emphasis will be placed on discussion, critical analysis, and cultural context.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in ENGL 097, or AESL 098, or appropriate test score.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain how history and culture influence subject matter and themes in painting.
2. Analyze image compositions applying the vocabulary of painting.
3. Prepare various surfaces for paint and apply color mixing theory appropriate to watercolor, acrylic and/or oil based media.
4. Utilize opaque and transparent painting techniques in watercolor, acrylic and/or oil based media.
5. Integrate subject, form and content to effectively communicate ideas in the creation of unique paintings.

Course Contents

1. Using presentations, electronic media, gallery/museum visits and/or text, students will examine the influence of history and culture upon artist subject matter and theme choices to communicate ideas in painting.
2. Students will analyze paintings (theirs and the work of others) through self-assessment and group critiques using the vocabulary of painting.
3. Students will learn painting surface preparation techniques and color mixing theory to appropriately utilize in watercolor, acrylic and/or oil based media.
4. Students will create works using both opaque and transparent painting techniques in watercolor, acrylic and/or oil based media.
5. Students will create unique works that integrate subject, form and content to effectively communicate ideas.
