 Course Description  

Introduction to drugs: sources, schedules, forms, uses and actions, side effects, adverse effects and classifications. Contributions of different cultures to drug therapy. Information regarding medication orders and prescriptions.

Prerequisite: AHE 102 with a "C" or higher or concurrent enrollment.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify sources, schedules, forms and classifications of drugs.
2. Discuss the uses, actions, side effects and adverse effects of drugs.
3. Define controlled substances, their storage and record-keeping requirements.
4. Utilize drug reference books.
5. Correctly interpret medication orders.
6. Discuss the various methods of non-parenteral administration of drugs.
7. Identify categories of drugs.
8. State the effects of drugs on the various systems of the body.
9. Recognize the 50 most prescribed drugs of the previous year.
10. Recognize the impacts of substance abuse in healthcare and for patients.
11. Describe the relationship between nutrients and medications.
