 Course Description  

Methods of collecting, processing, preparing, and preserving lab specimens. Discussion of government regulations and cultural beliefs concerning specimens. Urinalysis, pertinent hematology, immunology and microbiology tests and procedures are presented.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: AHE 108 with a grade of C or higher; and concurrent enrollment in AHE 115. Must provide documentation of first two injections of Hepatitis B vaccination series prior to registering for class.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. State the universal safety precautions and laboratory safety rules.
2. Accurately focus the binocular microscope.
3. Properly maintain and care for the binocular microscope.
4. Prepare selected laboratory equipment and supplies.
5. Use quality control principles and perform record keeping in the physicians� office laboratory (POLs).
6. Define terms used in microbiology and the medical laboratory.
7. Discuss the differences that aid in the identification of bacteria species.
8. Describe the requirements for bacterial growth.
9. Relate the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system.
10. Collect and preserve urine specimens.
11. Describe the purpose and significance of performing urinalysis; and perform urinalysis.
12. Describe the purpose and significance of hematological testing.
13. Perform selected hematology tests.
14. Describe the purpose and significance of immunological testing.
15. Perform selected immunology tests.
16. Describe the purpose and significance of microbiological testing.
17. Perform selected microbiology procedures.
18. Process and prepare specimens after collection.
19. Relate the procedures for disposal of biohazardous or contaminated materials.
20. Discuss the purpose and significance of blood chemistry testing.
