 Course Description  

Vocal technique including breathing, tone production, diction, and interpretation of literature from Spanish, German, Italian, folk and musical theater traditions. The mechanics of singing, the artistry of singing and building confidence in the individual solo voice are emphasized.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Sing various types of songs with a growing awareness of the skill necessary to sing artistically. This will be on different individual skill levels, as some will only be able to master carrying a tune, others may be able to sing different art songs. The student will have a practical understanding of anatomy, phonics, psychology, and kinesthetics related to producing vocal sounds.

Course Contents

1. Breathing techniques: a review of diaphragmatic, clavicular, and inter-costal muscle systems will be learned
2. Movements of lips, teeth, and tongue for greatest purity and clarity of vowels and consonants: classification of consonants and vowels using the International Phonetic Alphabet
3. Resonance: learning about pharyngeal areas in the mouth and head
4. Attacks and releases of tones: coordination of sub-glottic pressure
5. Singing confidence: basic psychotherapy theories on reducing stage fright
6. Anatomy of the voice related to body alignment
7. Memorization techniques such as mnemonics, loci, aural, and kinesthetic patterning will be introduced
8. Basic music theory
9. Time management and rehearsal strategies
