 Course Description  

Operation, diagnosis, service and repair of engine computer control systems with emphasis on ignition systems, engine mechanical condition, and engine sensors. Use of scan tools, lab scopes, and other specialty test equipment included.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisites: AT 133 with a D grade or higher; and concurrent enrollment in AT 205 and WT 133.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of automotive ignition systems and computer control service hazards and safety by conducting safe practices while working in the lab.
2. Demonstrate understanding of ignition systems and computer control components and their function by correctly identifying components and explaining their operation.
3. Demonstrate ability to diagnose engine mechanical condition correctly by performing live-vehicle diagnosis.
4. Demonstrate ability to diagnose a variety of ignition system problems by performing live-vehicle diagnosis.
5. Demonstrate ability to perform an ignition system tune-up by following a systematic process on a variety of live-vehicles.
6. Demonstrate ability to diagnose a variety of ignition systems using a lab scope by properly connecting, recording and interpreting lab scope patterns.
7. Demonstrate understanding of scan tool modes and their functions by accessing and interpreting data on a variety of live-vehicles.
8. Demonstrate understanding of vehicle module programming by preparing a vehicle for and/or performing a re-flash.
9. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Demonstrate ability to correctly test, diagnose, repair, and verify vehicle mechanical and electrical systems.
