 Course Description  

Learn basic Japanese karate stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks and their applications in varying combinations, individually and with partners. Practice of karate helps students improve or maintain physical strength, endurance, and flexibility. Emphasis is on proper form and safety.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate basic stances, blocks, strikes, and kicks in varying combinations individually and with partners in a safe manner.

Course Contents

  1. Show understanding of terminology and directions delivered in Japanese and/or English through writing, oral, or physical demonstration.
  2. Demonstrate single basic punches, strikes, blocks, and kicks from standing position (minimum 6 punches and strikes, 4 blocks, 5 kicks)
  3. Execute minimum four basic stances without a partner while moving forward and/or backward. Single or combinations of hand and foot techniques will be applied while moving.
  4. Show ability to combine multiple varied techniques in sequence as a self-defense application with or without a partner in 5 to 15 drills, dependent on complexity of drill.
  5. Demonstrate pre-arranged fighting style combinations of basic complexity with and without a partner, 5 to 15 different drills dependent on complexity of the drill.
  6. Three to six basic pre-arranged forms (kata) chosen at instructor's discretion, dependent upon the complexity and length. Forms typically have 20 to 50 movements each.
  7. Practice safe and controlled technique while working with partners, demonstrated by following directions and applying proper basic form.
  8. Obtain a minimal level of physical fitness by the end of the term. Twenty total push-ups minimum, 70 total reps abdominal exercises minimum.
  9. Illustrate assimilation of course content and material through any combination or single written paper, oral presentation, physical final examination, and/or final examination.
