 Course Description  

A study of the major theories of learning and motivation especially as they relate to humans in an educational setting. The course emphasizes the role of the teacher as a thoughtful and knowledgeable facilitator of learning.

Prerequisite: PSYC& 100 with a "C" or higher.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand and identify examples of conditioning
2. Explain cases of student behavior using concepts of operant conditioning such as reinforcement
3. Identify examples of modeling and other higher order learning in the classroom
4. Understand the components of the memory system
5. Apply appropriate problem solving strategies
6. Understand and apply study strategies that can be used to enhance student learning
7. Explain how different views of intelligence influence teaching
8. Explain the potential effect of socioeconomic class on school performance
9. Explain the role that culture and language may play in school success
10. Explain the role that gender may play in school success
11. Describe learner motivation on the basis of behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic theories
