 Course Description  

This course traces the historical roots of work, working conditions and attitudes towards work, as well as the impact of all these on individuals, families and groups in society, including women, children and ethnic groups.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: ENGL 099 with a "C" or higher (or placement into ENGL& 101).

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand the historical context of work and the development of the ""work ethic""
2. Identify elements of the history of work and labor in the U.S., including the roles of children, women and ethnic groups
3. Understand how attitudes toward work vary, depending on historical and economic conditions and factors like class, gender, age and ethnicity
4. Understand how and why attitudes toward work change
5. Understand the relationship between society's expectations about work and working conditions and the way individuals perceive themselves, their families and their communities
