 Course Description  

Stresses analysis of literature and its vocal and visual performance before an audience. Explores relationships between literary text, author, performer, and audience as well as delivery techniques. May focus on one or more literary genres.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: ENGL 099 with a "C" or higher (or placement into ENGL& 101).

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify and explain appropriate models, components, contexts, and/or common terminology of communication and oral interpretation.
2. Conduct explorations of various genres of literature�or a specific genre of literature�and apply literary analysis techniques to the selection, discussion, preparation, and oral performance of literary texts.
3. Adapt the performance of literary selections to diverse audiences, contexts, and speaking situations.
4. Build confidence in performing before the class, while working in groups, and in writing about literature.
5. Use vocal (pitch, rate, volume, articulation, pronunciation) and nonverbal behaviors to communicate literary texts to audiences.
6. Listen and respond actively, courteously, and critically as an audience member, including providing feedback on and/or written analysis of others' performances.
7. Apply textbook and literary reading assignments and library/technological research to individual, dyadic, and/or group projects.
8. Use technology to effectively retrieve and manage information, solve problems, and facilitate communication related to assignment preparation, submission, and/or delivery and other classroom issues.
9. Use time effectively in selecting literature, preparing programs, and presenting readings.
