 Course Description  

Learn how to safely and effectively obtain patient data that will allow accurate evaluation of the patient with minimum stress and maximum safety. Introduction to animal restraint, record charting, interview a client, pharmacology, and physical examination. Students will complete a Healthcare Provider CPR certification.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Learn and use the techniques for giving a basic physical exam.
  2. Prepare a medical record.
  3. Understand and use behavior and restraint techniques for various types of animals.
  4. Demonstrate safe lifting techniques for both dogs and equipment.
  5. Perform patient care, dental care, and examination techniques.
  6. Document and take medical history and breed identification (dogs and cats).
  7. Understand and communicate the definitions of preventative health, nutrition, and routine care.
  8. Understand the necessity of euthanasia in the care and treatment of animals.
  9. Use and understand the need for clothing and eye protection safety.
  10. Comply with personal & environmental safety practices associated with tools and equipment, proper ventilation, animal related injury, disease transmission and laboratory hazards.
  11. Receive certification for obtaining a current Healthcare Provider CPR card.
  12. Properly handle, store & dispose of chemicals/materials.
  13. Locate and understand local, state & federal safety and environmental regulations.
