 Course Description  

Examine habits, attitudes, and thought processes that lead to academic and professional success. Improve academic language skills including English writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.


Prerequisite: ELA 015 with a " P" or CASAS Reading score 220 or above.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Use simple, complex, and compound sentences effectively.
    • Identify and correct sentence fragments.
    • Select appropriate and consistent verb tenses.
    • Correctly combine sentences using appropriate transitional words and phrases and appropriate use of commas.
  2. Display writing competencies appropriate for progression into CCB 096.
    • Write basic summary paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details, closing sentences, and transitional phrases.
    • Implement a writing process that includes conscious use of planning, revision, and editing to create clarity and unity of ideas.
  3. Summarize texts, identifying main ideas.
  4. Develop metacognition and reading strategies through reading routines and extensive social reading opportunities.
