 Course Description  

ELA students with clearly defined academic goals will develop language-learning strategies and habits to successfully demonstrate English speaking and listening skills in settings approaching those to be encountered in a college setting.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite: CASAS testing and permission of ELA and AESL department chairs.

1. Attend lectures/presentations to apply listening skills and take notes on content to give related reports/evaluations.

Course Contents

1. State and support opinions in small group discussions.
2. Respond appropriately to different opinions.
3. Present and teach the class a skill or convey knowledge about a subject of personal interest.
4. Gather information through interviews to present conclusions in one or more oral reports.
5. Listen and ask appropriate questions of other students.
6. Prepare and deliver oral presentations using PowerPoint and other visual aids.
7. Understand video/taped material and respond in various ways to indicate comprehension.
8. Identify words/phrases used with the language functions of interrupting, introducing new ideas, and clarification.
9. Demonstrate increasing ability to understand and use American English pronunciation.
