Study of sterndrive propulsion systems. Includes common service procedures, model identification, vertical drive rebuilding procedures, trim/tilt functions, shift adjustments, utilizing service manuals and parts information for problem solving.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Remove and replace sterndrive from boat. Mount sterndrive to new boat, including adjusting shift cables.
  2. Drain, pressure and vacuum check and refill sterndrive. Winterize sterndrive.
  3. Remove and replace water pump assembly.
  4. Rebuild vertical drive assembly, including proper shimming and gear tooth contact procedures.
  5. Utilize service manuals and parts access information to identify and locate parts. Estimate time and cost of repair procedures.
  6. Adjust gear tooth backlash using specialized measuring equipment.
