 Course Description  

Advanced marine systems as found on recreational and small commercial vessels. Installation, design, and troubleshooting of modern marine systems such as water makers, fire suppression, propane, refrigeration, active stabilization, and advanced monitoring. Preparation for the ABYC Marine Systems certification exam.

Prerequisite: MT 132 with a "C" or higher.

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand design, scope, and operation of advanced marine systems.
  2. Understand the theory, installation requirements, and troubleshooting of advanced marine systems.
  3. Understand industry standards and best practice techniques for installing advanced systems.
  4. Install and wire typical vessel marine system components such as water makers, fire suppression, propane and refrigeration, active stabilization, using ABYC and NFPA guidelines and recommended practices.
  5. Understand the theory, requirements, and design of electrical systems to support installation of additional systems.
  6. Install electrical and control systems related to these systems. Perform routine system monitoring and troubleshooting.
  7. Perform routine maintenance procedures on hydraulic system.

  1. Introduction to modern systems found on cruising vessels including theory of operation.
  2. Familiarization with the scope of work involved in choosing and integrating these systems.
  3. Proper use of guidelines and recommended practices of the American Boat and Yacht Council and National Fire Protection Association relating to this content.
  4. Exploration, theory, and installation of permanently installed fire suppression systems.
  5. Exploration, theory, and installation of stabilization systems. Exploration, theory, and installation of reverse osmosis desalination equipment.
  6. Exploration, theory, and installation of propane systems. Troubleshoot common problems associated with these types of systems.
  7. Electrical and control systems related to these systems. Routine system monitoring and troubleshooting.
  8. Routine maintenance procedures on hydraulic system. System maintenance procedures.
