 Course Description  

Designed as an opportunity to apply learning on social capital theories and to develop and advance social capital in professional contexts. Analyze the features that define a professional presence in fields of interest. Examine the impact of implicit bias on professional presence and develop countering strategies. By the end of this course, students will have defined a workplace project/internship that they will implement in the next quarter.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Deconstruct the elements of effective managerial presence by investigating its application in student's field of interest.
  2. Navigate implicit barriers to an effective professional presence by investigating solutions to bridging cultural gaps.
  3. Evaluate the impact of bias on managerial presence by researching its application in student's field of interest.
  4. Identify a path to develop and sustain social capital by implementing a personal marketing plan to secure a workplace experience/internship to be conducted in BASAM 499 the following quarter.

Course Contents

  1. Professional written, spoken, and non-verbal interactions within a workplace setting,
  2. Personalized, effective digital presence appropriate for a workplace setting.
  3. Cultural differences in interaction styles and development of strategies and techniques to effectively interact with stakeholders in workplace and professional settings, including providing a voice for traditionally marginalized groups.
  4. Awareness and fluency in discourse patterns expected within target industry.
  5. Feedback and coaching from peers, instructors, and other stakeholders and adjust personal interaction style as necessary.
