 Course Description  

Introduction to Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Focusing on its uses in environmental and agricultural applications, including data management, GPS data integration with mapping software and displaying data with Google Earth and ArcMap. Emerging GPS data collection methods (i.e. apps like ArcCollector) with smart devices explored.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Use global positioning systems (GPS) in the field for data collection.
  2. Download coordinates in to a software program.
  3. Understand and use GPS with geographic information systems (GIS).
  4. Follow a GPS data collection program for obtaining field data. Manage GPS data.
  5. Display data using mapping software, i.e. Google Earth and ArcMap. Use shape files in ArcMap.
  6. Understand and use data processing in ArcMap and Excel.
  7. Create presentations of geospatial data.
