 Course Description  

Introduction to firefighting tools and equipment and basic firefighting techniques. Cognitive and skills development in emergency ground operations using firefighting companies. Focuses on presenting a fire service organizational structure to assist in developing traits that support professional and cultural development. Emphasis on fire ground safety. Meets some of the training requirements for Firefighter 1 certification and incrementally prepares the student for an eventual certification examination.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Have a working knowledge of the use, limitations and care of the Personal Protective Ensemble (PPE).
2. Properly don and activate Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), correctly wear the SCBA, use controlled breathing techniques, enact emergency procedures during simulated failures of the SCBA, recognize low air warnings, not intentionally compromise respiratory protection under any conditions, and exit hazardous areas prior to air depletion using the SCBA and other PPEs during simulated emergency operations.
3. Given vision-obscured conditions, exit hazardous areas as a team so that a safe haven is found before exhausting the air supply, others are not endangered, and team integrity is maintained.
4. Given cleaning supplies and an assignment, clean and inspect SCBA.
5. Have a working understanding of the nature of fire and the effects of various suppression agents on fire. Given a selection of portable fire extinguishers, the student will extinguish incipient Class A, Class B, and Class C fires with the appropriate extinguisher and inspect and perform routine maintenance on portable fire extinguishers.
6. Given various fire service ropes and application situations, tie knots common to the fire service and use for given tools/ropes/situations identify life safety and utility ropes, determine when and why to take a rope out of service, hoist tools and equipment using the correct knot, and understand using rope to support response activities.
7. Given cleaning supplies and an assignment, clean and check life safety and utility ropes.
8. Given an assignment, obscured visual conditions, personal protective ensemble, a flashlight, forcible entry tools, and rope guidelines, conduct a search and rescue in structures of various configurations and content, operating as a member of a team.
9. Have a thorough understanding of safety mandates and practices in the fire service.
10. Understand the Incident Management System and the concept of a personal accountability system including the use of Passports.
11. Develop an understanding of the professional expectations of the fire service through personal and team performance while in the classroom, on the training ground, and in casual settings.
