Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the principles of building construction and how it affects the fire service.
  2. Understand the principles used in the design of buildings.
  3. Identify a building and correctly apply the classification system for the building in accordance with the International Fire Code.
  4. Identify the important structural principals and features of a building and be familiar with the various types of building materials and how they affect structural integrity.
  5. Understand how structural systems are used in building construction.
  6. Identify critical size-up issues such as smoke, heat, and fire travel inside a structure, and predict the path or method of travel based upon the building construction features.
  7. Identify critical building collapse size-up issues and predict a building�s tendency toward collapse.
  8. Identify critical safety issues that affect firefighter safety for each classification of construction and identify appropriate measures to enhance the safety of emergency responders.
  9. PROGRAM OUTCOME: Students will understand how various work environments can affect development of hostile fire conditions.
