 Course Description  

A studio course introducing theory, practice, and history of photography as a medium of visual communication and creative expression. Field and laboratory work on guided self-directed projects in digital and black and white processing/printing. Students supply materials and digital camera. No text purchase. Fully manual film cameras are available in the lab. Lab fee.

Prerequisite: Appropriate placement or grade of 2.0 or higher in ENGL 099.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

1. Students will learn knowledge of the historic development of the photographic process and development of subject matter and themes in photography.
2. Students will learn competency in operating a 35 mm camera, processing in the dark room and use of a digital camera and application.
3. Students will learn the refinement of vision in black and white photography with emphasis on creating composition and content.
4. Students will learn to analyze photographs using the vocabulary of the discipline.

Course Contents

1. Using lectures and discussion students will learn the historic development and application of photography.
2. Using field work and (wet) laboratory work on guided self directed projects students will learn black and white processing and printing and when appropriate digital technique and application.
3. Using field work and portfolio development students will demonstrate photographic composition and development of idea, content and meaning.
4. Using formal critique sessions students will demonstrate analysis of their photographs using the vocabulary of the discipline.
