 Course Description  

Basic principles of electronic and engine computer control systems with emphasis on electronic ignition (DIS) and spark advance, fuel injection systems, diagnosis, repair, and tune-up. Use of scanners, scopes, and other test equipment included.

 Prerequisite  

Prerequisite or concurrent enrollment: AT 100 or 107. AT 133, 205, and 210.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand and perform proper safety procedures.
  2. Explain and diagnose primary ignition systems and secondary ignition systems.
  3. Understand and utilize appropriate diagnostic equipment including engine oscilloscope, gas analyzer, scan tool, and DVOM.
  4. Follow proper sequential steps in diagnosing and performing ignition ""tune-ups.""
  5. Properly utilize shop manuals, remove and repair assemblies on a vehicle to manufacturer's specifications of tolerance and fit.
  6. Understand and explain the theory of operation of computer-controlled ignitions and their sensors, and perform basic diagnosis of the different systems.
  7. Perform on-the-vehicle diagnosis and repair of drive-ability problems, including all computer controls and sensors.
  8. Determine appropriate ignition or computer control service by following a systematic diagnostic procedure.
  9. Demonstrate understanding of theory of operation of the following:
    • Ignition systems; distributorless ignitions, electronic, and point type.
    • Compression and vacuum.
    • Timing systems; computerized, vacuum, and centrifugal.
    • Emission systems: PCV, EGR, AIR, EVAP, and CAT.
    • Voltage signals: Digital and analog.
    • Interpretation of oscilloscope patterns.
    • DIS systems; diagnose and repair.
    • Oxygen sensors.
    • Computer controls; PCM and sensors.
